Day 22-25: Making my way to Erwin?
As I left Hotsprings I made my way back onto the trail and 10 miles up Spring Mountain. Along the way I ran back into several hikers that I had seen before, Outlaw and Mosey, along with others I had seen but not relaly talked to yet. Zero days let people catch back up to me and I was happy to see some familiar faces.
After spending the night I Spring Mountain, I was ready to build up my miles again, so I made my way 15 miles up and over Camp Creek bald and to Jerry's Cabin Shelter. Its named after a district attorney from the area named Jerry Miller. It was a nice enough location with a large camping area for tents. Gotta love flat ground and a bear box to put your food in. I would have tried to go further, the next shelter was more than 7 miles away and there were no campsites with a spring inbetween.
When I left the next morning I was feeling good afte a great night sleep and ready to keep invreasing my miles. I made my way 21.5 miles to the low gap campsite. As I came in late, ~7pm, there was another group, a father and two daughter we were just wrapping up dinner. I found a nice enough spot and set up for the evening. Unfortunately, I didnt sleep very well that night for reason I would find out later, but it wasnt the first time I got poor sleep in the trail.
The next morning, tired and sore, I set out to make my way to Erwin, TN. I made my way up Bald Mountain with its sepctacular veiws befor my stomach began to bubble. No worries I thought, theres a shelter with a privy just down the trail. So i made my way there, did my business, streched and had a snack before continuing on down the mountian.
As I made my way down to wishitling gap, my stomach still churned and gurgled, so I thought maybe the food I had last night was bad, but decided to push on. I had barely made it .3 miles up hightock before I lost all my stamina and had to tak a break half way up the mountain to lay down. After a 20 minute nap and dighing a cat hole, I knew something else was up, so I made my way up high rocks so I could get a signal and called for a shuttle pickup. Luckily I had my guide book and was able to find someone pretty quickly along with resting a room at the local super 8.
I made my way down to Spivey Gap and was pick up by Madison and brought to to the super 8. We had a wonderful time and conversation as we drown down the winding mountain roads. Thankfully, I was able to keep everything contained until we got to super 8 and I threw up in the parking lot. Maybe this was more than just bad food.
